Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine is a career that involves exposure to a wide-variety of physical, behavioural and life-threatening emergencies, in a fast-paced and high-acuity clinical environment. An Emergency Medicine Physician is a trained medical doctor that specialises in the prompt recognition, stabilisation and delivery of immediate care to the critically unwell patient.

How to Apply

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective trainees must:

Have an Australian or New Zealand primary medical degree
Australian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or necessary visa
Have full general registration with AHPRA
Be at least third postgraduate year (PGY3)
Have one 6-month (FTE) ED placement in a single Emergency Department
Have three placements in three different disciplines other than emergency medicine (at least one must have been completed during or after PGY2).

Program Structure

Structured 5 year training program consisting of

Training stage 1:

12 Months full time equivalent in adult/mixed ED

Training stage 2:

12 Months full time equivalent in ED

Training stage 3:

12 Months full time equivalent in ED

Training stage 4:

6 Months full time equivalent in ED

Over these stages the following is also required:

At least 6 months in a major referral ED and 12 months in a non major referral ED
At least 6 months in non-ED area during TS 1-3
At least 6 months anaesthetics/ICU during TS 2-4
